Column Subtraction With Borrow

Concept Explanation

Column Subtraction With Borrow

Column Subtraction can be performed by first subtracting the digits at ones place and then subtracting the digits at tens place.

For example let us solve the question

Subtract 74 from 81

81 - 74 = ?

We will first subtract the digits at units place that is we will subtract 4 from 1. But we cannot subtract as 4 is bigger than 1.

So we will regroup 81.

81 = 80 + 1

     =  8 tens + 1 ones

     = 7 tens + 1 ten + 1 ones

     = 7 tens + 10 ones + 1 ones

    = 7 tens + 11 0nes.

We will now subtract 4 from 11 we get 7

We will place 7 at the unit place of the answer.

Then we will subtract the digits at tens place that is we will subtract 7 from 7 we will get 0

We will place the 0 at tens place in the answer.

Hence the answer is 7
